Dreamscape (for Orchestra and electronic backing track) originated as a solely electronic piece, excluding sheet music and live musicians from the entire process. The beginning dreamy section quickly transformed into an upbeat minimalist section with repeated motifs, themes, and melodic content after an idea to combine the middle section with live chamber musicians (eventually an orchestra). Upon further exploration with a fairly-untamed field (for me), the beginning and ending aleatoric sections for the live performers was born to complement the electronic tracks. The freedom of the performers, in these sections, to choose when to play, for how long, etc. gave the piece a new definition. As I, both a performer and composer, delved into the world of minimalist music through my studies in school and in my recreational time, the greater my influences from that era of creativity became. The concept of repetition, simple harmonies, and no predefined interpretations found in minimalist music catapulted the creation of Dreamscape. A decreased string section is optimal for the performance of this piece, although full string sections are acceptable. The most challenging aspect is balance between the live musicians and the accompanying audio track, so the string section may be altered after initial rehearsals if need be, depending on the performance venue. Dreamscape has no specific narrative, yet it is not meaningless. Each audience member brings their own experiences, their own stories, and their own 'dreams' to the table. Any one, single interpretation is neither right nor wrong. Each person's perception of the performed sounds is a cherished and important aspect for a successful performance.
